Flash Fiction: Some Endings Arrive Without Permission (113 words)

“What happened?” Ash asked, meeting Landen when he reached the porch stairs. His head was bent as he took the first step, and she leaned one hand against the door frame before he looked up at her. He smiled almost immediately, but it was too thin to keep its shape, and he blinked trying to hold it.

“Just ran out of time,” he murmured. If his voice had been a little louder, it might not have seemed so weighted in his mouth, or hung so firmly between them.

She didn’t move, and he came up the steps on heavy feet. He squeezed her shoulders and gently pressed her back into the house.
